Project duration: 2 weeks

Overview

In the fast-paced digital age, sleep quality has become a growing concern for many adults. To address this issue, our team embarked on designing a wellness app called "Sleep Better." This app aims to track users' sleep patterns, provide personalized advice, and feature a comprehensive dashboard for analytical purposes. We’ve implemented the use of dashboards to provide comprehensive reports for the user to easily follow and understand.

My Role

As one of the UX/UI designers in the team, my role involved collaborating with my team members to ideate, design, and prototype the Sleep Better app. I contributed to various stages of the design process, from conducting user research to spearheading the wireframes and prototype designs. Our team carefully crafted a mood board and styles tiles that adequately conveyed the look and feel of our sleep tracking/wellness mobile application.

Design Process

  • Empathize

We began by empathizing with our target users through qualitative and quantitative research methods, including user interviews and surveys. This helped us understand the challenges and pain points faced by adults with poor sleep quality.

  • Define

Based on our research findings, we defined the problem statement: "Adults with poor quality of sleep need to find a way to have a detailed analysis and guidance about their sleeping patterns because healthy sleep habits will improve their overall health and well-being." We formulated How Might We statements to guide our ideation process.

  • Ideate

Using techniques such as brainstorming and the Crazy 8s activity, we generated ideas for addressing the identified challenges. We also conducted a competitive analysis of similar wellness/sleep tracking apps to gather insights and inspiration.

  • Prototype

We translated our ideas into tangible solutions through wireframing and prototyping. This involved creating user personas, user journeys, and user flows to ensure a seamless and intuitive user experience.

  • Test

We conducted concept and usability testing sessions with prototypes to gather feedback and iterate on the design. This iterative process helped us refine the app interface and functionality based on user preferences and needs.

User Research

Through user interviews and surveys, we gained valuable insights into the sleep habits and preferences of our target audience. We identified common challenges such as difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently during the night, feeling tired upon waking, and general distrust of using obstructive devices to track sleep. These insights informed our design decisions, allowing us to prioritize features and functionalities that would address users' needs effectively.

How Might We:

In an effort to find the quickest and most efficient solutions to our problem statement, my team and I completed a quick round of Crazy 8’s and honed in on the more relevant questions to our issues:

  1. How may we get people comfortable with the idea of using an unobtrusive device that is linked to an app for precise data collection?

  2. How may we introduce tips people can incorporate into their daily lifestyles that may help them improve their sleep quality?

  3. How may we help people understand why they may be having sleeping issues?

Wireframes & Prototypes

Using the insights from our user research, we created wireframes that outlined the layout and functionality of Sleep Better. These wireframes served as a blueprint for the app's design and navigation.

With the wireframes as a foundation, we developed a prototype of Sleep Better. This interactive prototype allowed us to simulate the app's user flow and functionality, enabling us to gather feedback and iterate on the design.

Lessons in Retrospect

Reflecting on our design process, we learned the importance of user-centered design and iterative testi ng. By prioritizing user feedback and iteration, we were able to create a sleep tracking app that effectively addresses the needs of its users. In collaborative settings, it’s important to identify each member’s strength and play to its advantage whenever possible. During the course of this project, what I found most beneficial was not getting too hung up on obstacles and delegating tasks where necessary. This helped us pace ourselves efficiently and not fall behind when minor issues arose.

What's Next?

Moving forward, we plan to continue refining Sleep Better based on user feedback, desirability testing results, and market trends. We aim to enhance its features, expand its compatibility with additional devices, and explore opportunities for integration with other wellness platforms.
